Difference Between a Proxy and VPN(Virtual Private Network)

A Virtual Private Network (VPN) is a private communication network that is used over a public network. A VPN protects the data transfer between an internet gateway between various devices such as laptop, iPad, iPhone or Android device by securing the messages and web browsing activities from hackers.

A proxy server allows the users to surf the web anonymously by hiding the real IP address of the user. Thus the basic function of both proxies and VPN is to change your IP address and to access all the sites from anywhere in the world without any restrictions.

However, a proxy has no encryption features, which makes it possible for the hackers to steal your data over public Wi-Fi. VPN, on the other hand, will offer the double benefit of anonymous browsing and safe data transfer by virtue of its encryption options.

Both Proxies and VPN are useful for online marketing companies, SEO campaigns and internet users alike. Proxies allow you to create multiple accounts and to post unlimited blogs, posts and videos without the risk of being banned by Google and to bypass the strict guidelines and rules that control the SEO campaigns these days.

VPN is more secure and safe in transmitting sensitive information like bank details and credit card information as it offers a fool proof mechanism. It is more expensive than proxies and are more suited for businesses and online marketing companies.

Comparison of VPN and Proxy
·    The encrypted data transfer in VPN makes it safe and secure where no hackers or third parties can sneak into it real time. Whereas in proxies, the data remain open for sniffing and the hackers can easily gain access to sensitive information.
·    Majority of proxies are transparent where the user's IP address only remain hidden temporarily, which makes it possible for the hackers to retrieve the IP address and locate your physical location. In VPN your real IP address is fully hidden and the users will be using a proxy IP address, which makes it impossible for anyone to follow your online activities.
·    Proxy servers has a very low uptime in comparison to VPN
·    Not all of programs that are compatible with Windows and other OS can work correctly with proxy servers, whereas no such issues arise in VPN.
